Ballpoint Pen Drawings of Artist Samuel Silva Become Viral (Photo)

Samuel Silva is not your ordinary lawyer in Portugal. His ballpoint drawings recently became viral for his passion for art.

Silva claimed to have started drawing at the age of 2. Although ballpoint pens (particularly the brand BIC) are his main medium for his art, he is also proficient with chalk, pencil, color pencil, pastels, oils and acrylics.

Among his ballpoint drawings which he shared in his Deviant Art account, the “RedHead Girl” was the favorite of many and gathered the most number of comments from his visitors.

Silva said he used seven different colors of BIC ballpoint pens including color black to finish the “Redhead Girl” drawing based from the photograph of Russian photographer Kristina Taraina. It took him approximately 30 hours to finish it by cross hatching the different colors in layers to create the illusion of blending.

Despite his genius talent for ballpoint drawings, Silva claimed he is not considering himself as a professional artist. “No, I’m just a lawyer, art is just a hobby for me, although it takes from 5 to 50 hours to finish each drawing,” he said.

He ended his profile at Deviant Art by saying: “Ballpoint pens are as underestimated as they are a powerful medium. It’s not about what you use, it’s about how you use it.”
