Neighbor Bus Driver Catches Falling Girl from 3rd floor Window in New York (Video)

A man named Stephen St. Bernard, 52, was being hailed as a hero for catching and saving a 7-year-old girl who fell three stories from an air conditioning unit outside a Brooklyn building in New York.

According to reports, St. Bernard, a MTA bus driver in New York and a father of four, was on his way home from work on Monday, July 16, 2012, shortly after 2 p.m. local time. He was parking his car when he observed a commotion outside the Coney Island housing complex. Several children asked him to help a 7-year-old girl named Keyla McCree, who was then in danger, seemingly unafraid and moving about.

“I saw a little girl standing on the air conditioner. I said to myself, ‘Let me get over to her in time.’ I just prayed that I’d catch her. Please let me catch her, please let me catch her. That’s all I could say. I made it just in time,” St. Bernard narrating the incident.

“This was the biggest catch of my life. She just looked shocked. I picked her up and carried her. She kept looking around. She never closed her eyes. She never lost consciousness. I was cool at the time, but my heart was racing. What would have happened if I didn’t catch her?,” he added.

“She fell and she put her hands out. Her head hit a bush, but Steve caught the rest of her body,” said witness Jesse Padilla, 9.

It wasn’t clear how she got there, but witnesses told that Keyla crawled out by pulling aside the unit’s accordion-like plastic partitions that keep the air conditioner secured in the window, while her mother Shaleema was out of the room with her younger brother. Neighbors noted that the girl was a special child suffering from autism.

The girl was taken to a Coney Island hospital with minor injuries together with the hero rescuer St. Bernard who suffered a torn tendon in his shoulder after the catching incident.

Police said no charges were filed against the parents of the girl.
